Summer of 1999 Composers Seminar:

What an exciting Summer Composers' Seminar !!! As part of it, we have produced six self portrait presentations of visiting and resident composers and nine full concerts, all virtually consisting of first performances, all in all ca. seventy one (71) new works premiered, out of which twenty six by our own participant student composers.

As usual, we have had in the same class students of every level of education, one fresh out of highschool, five undergrads (from Oberlin, Peabody, Boston Univ., USC and NYU), nine MA students (Boston Univ. and NYU), two doctoral candidates from NYU, one professional level composer, director of a music foundation, and six non students, two commercial composers, and a few who graduated from school at different levels and working full time. We had people from Germany, Iran, Argentina, Colombia, Equador, Venezuela, Korea and Taiwan. Stylistically, this was about the reachest selection of interests, from neo-romantic, to minimalist, atonal, improvizational, graphic and aleatoric scores, electro-acoutic pieces, multimedia presentations, music fro modern dance, film music, world music, etc.

Our resident ensemble worked day & night in six rehearsals, three dress rehearsals and three final productions and recordings. We have had the wonderful collaboration of ca. 28 sound engineers, taking the NYU parallel course, the Tonmeister Program, so well directed and taught by Dr. Ken Peacock and Prof. Paul Geluso. Where can be found a program in which each composer had their own assigned recording engineer !!!

Our final product - the production of a double CD - will definitely be a very interesting collection of outstanding new talent.

The lecture type self portraits - presented by Leo Kraft, Justin Dello Joio, Monique Copper, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Philip Johnston, Ron Mazurek - were held during the first three semesters of the seminar, while students were working on their new compositions.

My great gratitude for my very able assistant Chianan Yen, and the student coordinators, Carlos Delgado, Eric Foinquinos, Matt Vinson and Chris Freeman.
